Auriou Chair Making Rasps

We offer a selection of Auriou rasps which will help you in your chairmaking. Many very well known professional chairmakers use Auriou rasps in the making of their chairs.

Auriou Rasp - Shaping a chair seat Ref: CMR250

There are many ways to shape the buttock hollows for a chair seat. Arbortech, King Arthur tools or the new Auriou rotary rasps are favoured by some for their quick action but hand tool workers may prefer initial shaping with an inshave or hand adze. This may establish the rough shape but this needs to refined by spokehaves or a good quality rasp. Auriou produce a curved cabinet rasp which is coarse enough to quickly work concave areas of your seat ready for final shaping and finishing by scrapers.

10" long curved rasp with walnut handle. This is exellent for shaping the seat as it allows you to work the concave areas of your seat. Stitched on one side only, tapered, maximum width 32mm.

Auriou Rasp - Shaping Chair Legs & Arms - Initial Shaping Ref: CMR

A long 1/2 round or cabinet rasp is essential for quick and relatively effortless shaping of chair legs and arms. These limbs are usually rough shaped by a band saw and often you reduce this with a drawknife followed by a spokehave and scraper. A drawknife can split your wood so you have to be very careful that you do not spoil your work. An Auriou rasp is a more versatile and quicker (oh yes it is) shaping tool. It will not split your wood and because you can guide a rasp very precisely you can work to a pencil line very accurately.

As a rule of thumb you need a rasp that is 3/4 times longer than the width of the wood you are are shaping. The Auriou rasp has tremendous cutting power when used properly and our recommendations here have both flat and convex sides so you can shape flat, convex and concave areas. Chair legs are often made up of complex sections, particularly cabriole legs.

These rasps are available in left or right handed models.
The address position for holding your rasp is slightly skewed across the grain (just like you skew a plane along the grain) - so Auriou offset the cutting teeth to allow for this skew angle so the teeth cut straight. A right hander skews his rasp on the opposite side to a left hander so Auriou offset the teeth either side of straight, depending on your handedness. This is done for ergonomic, efficiency and comfort reasons. It is so much easier than trying to push the tool dead straight.

We do accept that most lefties will be fairly ambidextrous and can happily use a right handed rasp.

3 rasp option - If you make a lot of chairs you will need more than one rasp for the initial shaping work. The 12" (300mm) roughing rasp - 1/2 round grain 3, followed by the 12" cabinet rasp grain 6 or grain 8 and then either the 10" (250mm) Grain 9 or 9"(225mm) grain 10. A combination of these 3 rasps will allow you to work very quickly and accurately.

If you chose 2 rasps for this initial shaping work, then chose the 12" grain 6 and the 10" grain 9. This will allow you to work to a reasonable fine finish.

If you chose one rasp for this initial shaping work, then chose the 12" grain 8. It will take you a little longer to get to your required shape but if you are in no hurry and one rasp is all your budget allows, then this is the one for you.

Auriou Rasps - Finishing & Detail Rasps for Chairmakers

There are many places on a chair where final shaping requires a shorter, finer grain rasp.
Please refer to the complete rasp Auriou section for all the alternatives but here are a few suggestions which have been sold in some quantities to chairmakers.

These are often called modellers rasps and they are essentially best described as thin, fine cabinet rasps.

Modellers Rasps Ref: G 01 06

These are similar to cabinet rasps but are not as wide relative to their length. This allows you to work in tighter spaces. They are for more delicate shaping work and complement the work done by cabinet makers rasps. The 6" (150mm) grain 15 rasp is for making very fine refinements to your work whilst the 7" (175mm) grain 13 rasp is an excellent choice for final shaping work.

Available in left or right handed models.
